Chemicals for Rifle Maintenance

Cleaning and preserving chemicals prolong rifle life. Solvents break down leftover gunk and metal fouling from primer detonation, powder burning, and the passing of the bullet through the bore. Acids left behind by our fingers are also attacked by solvents, as are other foreign substances, dust and dirt mainly.
Preserving chemicals are introduced to the cleaned firearm to protect against wear caused by friction and to help thwart rust. Solvents and preserving chemicals have to be used wisely. A drop of oil in the action, for example, is a good idea. Dousing the action in oil is a terrible idea. Excess grease and oil collect dirt and defy the very reason for using these agents in the first place, to create a film between moving metal parts and to form a protective shield against humidity.

In one test, bullets grouped 6 inches off of sight-in because of an oily bore. Furthermore, it’s been shown that damage can occur to the rifling if a bullet has to force its way down an oily bore. The oil is compressed by the bullet. Look at the oil dent in a resized cartridge case, which is caused by excessive lubrication in the resize die, and you get a good idea of how much hydraulic force can be applied by a liquid or grease under pressure. For everyday cleanup, chemicals such as Outers solvent, work very well, either in liquid or spray form. however, every few sessions a heavy duty solvent is necessary to remove stubborn powder and metal fouling. J-B Cleaning compound for example aids in the removal of lead, bullet jacket metal and powder residue, as do other hardworking cleaning agents, such as Shooter’s Choice and Gold Medallion.

Silicone water and stain repellents, such as Outer Water Shed, WD-40 and RIG 2, are also useful in removing various types of metal fouling in the bore and on outer barrel and action. Sometimes a metal degreaser, such as Outers Crud Cutter, can be used to get rid of all previous chemical preservatives before reapplying a fresh coating. Another chemical which can be named in the preserving role is a cold blue, such as Birchwood Casey’s Super Blue Shiny metal parts can be touched up with this blue, not only for cosmetic reasons, but to restore the protection that blues provide metal.
