In every home or work environment you'll find supplies and materials that are considered hazardous waste when it's time to dispose of them: fuel, lubricant, oil, cleaning solvent, degreaser, antifreeze, brake fluid and the like.
They can harm the environment if you spill them or dispose of them the wrong way. That's a good reason to follow Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rules and regulations on hazardous waste disposal.
But that's not the only reason. The other reason involves dollars and cents: The EPA can fine you and your unit if it's caught breaking the regulations.
There are specifically designed outdoor storage & dispensing buildings and lockers. These buildings, called
Hazmat Storage Buildings hold 55 gallon drums containing flammable or combustible liquids. Outdoor storage buildings are engineered with 3” airspace throughout. All models are designed in accordance with the standards set forth by NFPA Code 30 and comply with OSHA & EPA regulations.
Hazardous Material Lockers and Buildings are available with a 2-hour and 4-hour fire rating. Chemical Storage units located within 10 feet of a main building or property line require 4-hour fire rating. Units located more than 10 feet and less than 50 feet from a main building or property require a 2-hour fire rating. Units located more than 75 feet require no fire rating.
A Hazmat Storage Building comes with many options from having interior shelving for smaller flammable containers to having explosion relief panels and leak tight welded sumps for secondary containment.

* failing to label drums in the storage areas with the date when waste was first stored in them
* failing to maintain adequate aisle space
* neglecting to have all hazardous waste handlers trained or failing to maintain training records
* failing to have fire extinguishers and spill control equipment on hand
* failing to close hazardous waste containers
